Teaching words in semantic groups is a feature of a number of effective approaches to vocabulary instruction. A number of institutions have suggested that vocabulary words can be taught in such groups. This study compares the effects of teaching words either semantic groups. In the given context, “school, teacher, headmaster, and peon” are put in semantic groups because all these are related to education. They cannot be put in phonetic groups because their pronunciations are different. Grammatical grouping cannot be applied as these words do not follow same grammar rule. A lexical set is a group of words with the same topic, function or form.
