In vapour state sulphur partly exists as S2 molecule which has two unpaired electrons in the anti bonding π* orbitals like O2 and hence exhibits paramagnetism. Paramagnetism refers to a property of materials in which they are attracted to a magnetic field. Paramagnetism results from the presence of atleast one unpaired spin in the material’s atoms or molecules. Since in the vapour state sulphur has two unpaired electrons, it exhibits paramagnetism.
