Question Numbers: 55-60
Directions: Read the following passage and answer the questions from 55 to 60 given below :
Social sciences have always been involved in an uneasy relationship with the demands of time. Of course, great thinkers, Gandhi, Tolstoy, Thoreau have always advocated the role of social sciences in the previous three industrial revolutions, the forthcoming fourth one is not inclined to rate the importance of social sciences. A World Bank report says measures are needed to enhance the quality and relevance of higher education in India so that the education system is more demand-driven, quality-conscious, and forward-looking.
The problem with social sciences is that they are slow in responding to the demands of the economy. Private universities have risen to these demands and are augmenting courses like industrial psychology, labour sociology, law, management, Alas! These do not core social sciences per se.
Abdul Kalam had understood the importance of these demands and advised engineering colleges to offer courses in philosophy, sociology, and literature.
It is high time social scientists rise to the occasion and stop the erosion of human values, seen in physical sciences and software technologies. They have to sell the idea that all successful men are not happy but all happy men are successful.
