Juvenile Justice (Care and Protection) Act, 2015 gives various directions to the government which inter-alia includes:
Creation of at least one or more Juvenile Justice Board(s) in each district to perform the powers and functions assigned to them under this act.
It also mandates to have one Special Juvenile Police Unit in each district and a Child Welfare Police Officer in each police station.
While interacting with the child, the juvenile welfare officer shall in civil uniform as far as possible.
When any child is apprehended by police who is accused of an offence, he/she shall be handed over to the custody of that Juvenile Welfare Police Officer or with special juvenile police unit within 24 hours.
Parents of the child are to be informed about his/her apprehension by the police and any questioning with the child shall be made in the presence of parents or child welfare officer.
If in a case any other person involved with the child both shall be tried separately.
If a child, when apprehended of any offence, was under 18 years but later on turns to be 18 while proceedings are pending, he/she shall still be tried as a juvenile only.
