What inspired N. Bartlett for carrying out reaction between Xe and PtF6\mathrm{PtF}_6?
Solution:
Neil Bartlett observed that PtF6\mathrm{PtF}_6 reacts with O2\mathrm{O}_2 to yield an ionic solid,O2+PtF6\mathrm{O}_2^{+}\,\mathrm{PtF}_6^{-}.
Here, O2\mathrm{O}_2 gets oxidised to O2+\mathrm{O}_2^{+} by PtF6\mathrm{PtF}_6.
Since the first ionisation enthalpy of Xe(1170 kJ mol1^{-1}) is fairly close tothat of O2\mathrm{O}_2 molecule (1175 kJ mol1^{-1}), Bartlett thought that PtF6\mathrm{PtF}_6should alsooxidise Xe. When Xe and PtF6\mathrm{PtF}_6 were mixed, a rapid reaction took place anda red solid with the formula, Xe+PtF6\mathrm{Xe}^{+}\mathrm{PtF}_6^{-}was obtained.
Xe+PtF6278KXe+[PtF6]\mathrm{Xe} + \mathrm{PtF}_6 \xrightarrow{278\,\text{K}} \mathrm{Xe}^{+} [\mathrm{PtF}_6]^{-}
