Question : 31 of 74
Marks: +1, -0
What are the oxidation states of phosphorus in the following :
(i) H3PO3\mathrm{H_3PO_3}
(ii) PCl3\mathrm{PCl_3}
(iii) Ca3P2\mathrm{Ca_3P_2}
(iv) Na3PO4\mathrm{Na_3PO_4}
(v) POF3\mathrm{POF_3}?
Solution:
Let the oxidation state of P be x.
(i)H3PO3+1  x23(+1)+x+3(2)=0 or x=+3\overset{+1 \; x-2}{\mathrm{H_3PO_3}} \therefore 3(+1) + x + 3(-2) = 0 \text{ or } x = +3
(ii)PCl3x1x+3(1)=0 or x=+3\overset{x -1}{\mathrm{PCl_3}} \therefore x + 3(-1) = 0 \text{ or } x = +3
(iii) Ca3P2+2  x3(+2)+2×x=0\overset{+2 \; x}{\mathrm{Ca_3P_2}} \therefore 3(+2) + 2 \times x = 0 or x=3x = -3
(iv) Na3PO4+1  x23(+1)+x+4(2)=0\overset{+1 \; x-2}{\mathrm{Na_3PO_4}} \therefore 3(+1) + x + 4(-2) = 0 or x=+5x = +5
(v) POF3x2  1x+1(2)+3(1)=0\overset{x-2 \; -1}{\mathrm{POF_3}} \therefore x + 1(-2) + 3(-1) = 0 or x=+5x = +5
