Question : 15 of 21
Marks: +1, -0
Determine the volume contraction of a solid copper cube, 10 cm on an edge, when subjected to a hydraulic pressure of 7.0×1067.0 \times 10^{6} Pa.
Solution:
Here, L = 10 cm = 0.1 m
B=B= bulk modulus of Cu=140×109 Pa,P=7×106 Pa\mathrm{Cu}=140\times 10^{9}\ \mathrm{Pa}, P=7\times 10^{6}\ \mathrm{Pa}
ΔV=\Delta V= Volume contraction of solid copper cube =?=?
V=L3=(0.1)3=0.001 m3\therefore V=L^{3}=(0.1)^{3}=0.001\ \mathrm{m}^{3}
From formula, B=P(ΔVV),B=-\frac{P}{\left(\frac{\Delta V}{V}\right)}, we get =0.05×106 m3=0.05 cm3=-0.05\times 10^{-6}\ \mathrm{m}^{3}=-0.05\ \mathrm{cm}^{3}
Here –ve sign shows volume contraction.
