Question : 14 of 21
Marks: +1, -0
Compute the fractional change in volume of a glass slab, whensubjected to a hydraulic pressure of 10 atm.
Solution:
Here, P=10atm=10×1.013×105PaP=10\,\text{atm}=10\times 1.013\times 10^{5}\,\text{Pa}
Bulk modulus of glass B=37×109Nm2B=37\times 10^{9}\,\text{N}\,\text{m}^{-2}
Volumetric strain =ΔVV=PB=\frac{\Delta V}{V}=\frac{P}{B}
=10×1.013×10537×109=\frac{10\times 1.013\times10^{5}}{37\times10^{9}}
=2.74×105=2.74\times10^{-5}
\therefore Fractional change in volume =ΔVV=2.74×105=\frac{\Delta V}{V}=2.74\times10^{-5}
