IAEA Seeks to promote the peaceful use of nuclear energy, and to inhibit its use for any military purpose, including nuclear weapons.
A special set of India-specific safeguards, negotiated with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), a UN body, ensures that imported uranium was not diverted for military use.
By placing the reactors under the IAEA safeguards, India gives the international nuclear energy watchdog access to them. This step was taken by the country in 2014 to demonstrate that its nuclear energy programme was for peaceful purposes.
So far 20 facilities have been placed under IAEA safeguards. These reactors are now eligible to use imported uranium.
