Photosynthesis is the process by which leaves absorb light and carbon dioxide to produce carbohydrate (food) for plants to grow. Chlorophyll in the leaves of plants absorbs light energy from the Sun. Plants use this energy to convert water and CO2 from the environment into glucose and oxygen.
