The Chipko Movement (1973) started in the village of Reni in Garhwal, Uttarakhand. The main goal was to embrace and protect the trees, not to allow these trees to be cut down. The name 'Chipko' is derived from the word 'hug' as the villagers hug andsurround the trees. Tehri Dam Conflict and Narmada Bachao Andolan were protest against the construction of dams in Uttarakhand and Madhya Pradesh, respectively. Save Silent Valley Movement was launched for the protection of Silent Valley, an evergreentropical forest in the Palakkad district of Kerala.
