The Kalinga war happened eight years after Ashoka's coronation. Ashoka was the third king of the Mauryan Empire who was best-known for his renunciation of war and development of the concept of dhamma (pious social conduct). The Kalinga war was fought between the Mauryan Empire of Magadha and the independent and prosperous state of Kalinga.
