Rajat and Atul can do a piece of work in 9 days and 12 days respectively. If they work for a day alternately, with Rajat beginning, in how many days, the whole work will be completed?

Solution:

Efficiency of Rajat =

\frac{100}{9}=11.11\%

Efficiency of Atul =

\frac{100}{12}=8.33\%

→ They do (11.11 + 8.33) % = 19.44% is 2 days

∴ They need 10 days to do 97.20% of work

Now the rest work (100 - 97.22 = 2.78% ) was done by Rajat

=\frac{2.78}{11.11}=\frac{1}{4}

day

∴ Total no. of days required to complete the whole work =

10+\frac{1}{4}=10\frac{1}{4}\text{days}
