The Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan was launched by the government in 1999.
The Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan was also known as the Total Sanitation Campaign.
The main objective of this scheme was to improve the sanitation conditions in rural areas of the country.
The concept of sanitation was expanded to include personal sanitation, household hygiene, clean drinking water, garbage disposal, excreta disposal and wastewater disposal.
The Nirmal Bharat Yojana was mainly focused on creating awareness among people and creating demand for sanitation facilities. Not only houses but also villages, schools and community centres and Anganwadi centres come under the Nirmal Bharat Yojana.
The implementation of this program also involves the cooperation of Panchayati Raj Institutions through various local social movements.
Now Nirmal Bharat Abhiyan is continued as Sawachh Bharat Abhiyan.
