To curb the practice of female foeticides and seize the declining sex ratio in India Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques (PCPNDT) Act, 1994 was enacted.
Female foeticide means killing a female child in the mother’s womb.
Sex ratio means the number of females per thousand males.
There has been a tendency of choosing a boy over girls at the time of birth and these diagnostic techniques were freely allowing checking the sex of the foetus.
Hence this act was enforced to prevent sex-selective abortions.
