The average temperature of the town in the first four days of a month was 58 degrees.The average for the second, third, fourth and fifth days was 60 degrees. If the temperatures of the first and fifth days were in the ratio 7 : 8, then what is the temperature on the fifth day?

Solution:

Let temperature of the town in five days are

7x, x_1, x_2, x_3

and

8x

degrees respecitvely; Then,

7x + x_1 + x_2 + x_3 = 4 \times 58 = 232

...(i)

And

x_1 + x_2 + x_3 + 8x = 4 \times 60 = 240

...(ii)

Now, Subtracting (i) and (ii), we get,

8x - 7x = 240 - 232

\Rightarrow x = 8

Hence, temperature of the town on fifth day

= 8x = 8 \times 8

= 64 degrees.
