Read the passage given below and answer the questions that follow choosing the correct alternatives given:
Science is a systematic study of the materials and the phenomena of the natural world. There are several branches of science. The science of chemistry deals with the compositions of materials and the changes that can take place in them. Chemistry had its beginnings in very olden times. In studying the great river valley civilizations, scholars have found evidence to show that the processes of chemistry were known to the people in olden times. The ancient Egyptians, Hindus and Chinese were interested in the preparation of medicines and perfumes and in metal work and pottery. These activities required the application of their knowledge of chemistry.
Chemistry during Middle Ages was not a pursuit of knowledge for its own sake. Its aims were more practical. There was belief among the people that base metals like lead and copper could be converted into the noble metal, gold. The philosopher's stone was supposed to have the power to bring about this change.
