When chemosensitive area gets activated due to increase in concentration of CO2 and H+ions, in arterial blood, it signals to respiratory rhythm centre to make necessary adjustments. Neural signals from pneumotaxic centre can reduce the duration of inspiration and thereby alter the respiratory rate.
