 'D' represents the orientation of hydroxyl group at the chiral carbon that is farthest from the highest oxidised carbon (aldehyde group in case of glucose and keto group in fructose) when the - OH group is on the right side, 'L' is used when - $\mathrm{OH}$ group is on the left side. $(+)$ and $(-)$ represents the direction of rotation of plane polarised light $(+)$ is clockwise rotation and $(-)$ is anticlockwise rotation.α-is used when - $\mathrm{OH}$ group at anomeric carbon is below the ring in Haworth projection, β is used when - $\mathrm{OH}$ group at anomeric carbon is above the rings in Haworth projection.
