Solution:

The van der Waals equation is

\left(p + \frac{a}{V^2}\right) (V-b)

= RT

but it is given that b = 0. So, the equation reduces to

\left(p + \frac{a}{V^2}\right) V

= RT ⇒ pV =

-\frac{a}{V} + RT

Comparing it with a straight line equation we get slope as −a.

Calculating the slope, we get

\frac{24.6+20.1}{3.0-0}

= 1.5 ⇒ a = 1.5
