x^2 – 3x – 88 = 0

y^2 + 8y – 48 = 0

Solution:

(1) I.

x^2 – 3x – 88 = 0

⇒

x^2 – 11x + 8x – 88 = 0

⇒ x (x – 11) + 8 (x – 11) = 0

⇒ (x + 8) (x – 11) = 0

⇒ x = – 8 or, 11

II.

y^2 + 8y – 48 = 0

⇒

y^2 + 12y – 4y – 48 = 0

⇒

y^2 + 12y – 4y – 48 = 0

⇒ y (y + 12) – 4 (y + 12) = 0

⇒ (y – 4) (y + 12) = 0

⇒ y = 4 or, – 12

Clearly, x > y
