x^2 - 1 = 0

y^2 + 4y + 3 = 0

Solution:

x^2 - 1 = 0

\Rightarrow (x + 1) (x - 1) = 0

⇒ x = - 1 or 1

II.

y^2 + 4y + 3 = 0

\Rightarrow y^2 + 3y + y + 3 = 0

\Rightarrow y (y + 3) + 1 (y + 3) = 0

\Rightarrow (y + 1) (y + 3) = 0

⇒ y = -1 or – 3

Clearly,

x \ge y
