On Wednesday, the ratio of speed of boat in still water in going upstream to downstream is 4 : 5. The difference between time to cover upstream distance and downstream distance is 5 hours, find the total time taken to cover upstream distance and downstream distance.

Solution:

On Wednesday,

\frac{39}{4x-2} - \frac{18}{5x+2} = 10

\Rightarrow \frac{123x+114}{20x^2-10x+8x-4} = 5

\Rightarrow 123x + 114 = 100x^2 - 10x - 20

\Rightarrow 100x^2 - 133x - 134 = 0

\Rightarrow 100x^2 - 200x + 67x - 134 = 0

\Rightarrow 100x (x - 2) + 67 (x - 2) = 0

\Rightarrow (x - 2)(100x + 67) = 0

\Rightarrow x = 2

∴ Required time

= \frac{39}{8-2} + \frac{18}{10+2}

= \frac{96}{12} = 8\text{hours}
