Nitrobenzene on electrolytic reduction in strong acidic medium will give p-aminophenol. This conversion takes place in two steps. Step 1 Nitrobenzene reacts with conc. H2SO4 to produce phenylhydroxylamine.
Step 2 Phenylhydroxyl amine rearranges to form p-aminophenol.
