The alkaline earth metals are Be, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba and Ra.Densities of the first four members are: Be=1.85 gcm−3, Mg=1.74 gcm−3, Ca=1.55 gcm−3, Sr=2.64 gcm−3.Comparing these values, Ca has the smallest density, which is lower than even that of Be and Mg.This is due to the comparatively large atomic size and relatively weak metallic bonding of Ca in its crystal lattice, which gives it an unusually open structure.Hence the alkaline earth metal with the lowest density is Ca.
