PCC (Pyridinium chlorochromate) oxidises primary alcohols to carbonyl compounds. In case of given compound, mathrm‌OH is oxidised to aldehyde group. During Tollens' test aldehyde group is oxidised to carboxylic acid. When it reacts with bromine and red phosphorus, bromine is substituted at alpha carbon atom.
