Carius method is used for estimation of halogens in organic compound. A known mass of the organic substance is heated with fuming nitric acid and a few crystals of silver nitrate in a sealed tube called carius tube in furnace is washed, dried and weighed, knowing the mass of substance taken (W) and the mass of precipitate formed (X), the percentage of halogen is calculated as
