Question : 126 of 271
Marks: +1, -0
1x(xn+1)\frac{1}{x(x^n+1)}
[Hint: multiply numerator and denominator by xn−1x^{n-1} and put xn=tx^n = t]
Solution:
Let I=∫dxx(xn+1)I=\int\limits \frac{dx}{x(x^n+1)} =∫xn−1x⋅xn−1(xn+1)dx=\int\limits \frac{x^{n-1}}{x \cdot x^{n-1}(x^n+1)}dx =∫xn−1xn(xn+1)dx=\int\limits \frac{x^{n-1}}{x^n(x^n+1)}dx
Put xn=tx^n = t ⇒nxn−1dx=dt\Rightarrow nx^{n-1} dx = dt
∴I=1n∫dtt(t+1)\therefore I=\frac{1}{n}\int\limits \frac{dt}{t(t+1)}
Let 1t(t+1)=At+Bt+1\frac{1}{t(t+1)}=\frac{A}{t}+\frac{B}{t+1} ⇒1=A(t+1)+Bt\Rightarrow 1 = A(t + 1) + Bt ...(i)
Putting t = 0 in (i), we get 1 = A(0 + 1) ⇒ A = 1
Putting t = –1 in (i), we get 1 = B(–1) ⇒ B = – 1
∫dxx(xn+1)=1n∫(1t−1t+1)dt\int\limits \frac{dx}{x(x^n+1)}=\frac{1}{n}\int\limits \left(\frac{1}{t}-\frac{1}{t+1}\right)dt =1n[log⁡∣t∣−log⁡∣t+1∣+C]=\frac{1}{n}\left[ \log \left| t \right| - \log \left| t+1 \right| + C \right]
=1nlog⁡∣tt+1∣+C=1nlog⁡∣xnxn+1∣=\frac{1}{n}\log \left| \frac{t}{t+1} \right| + C = \frac{1}{n}\log \left| \frac{x^n}{x^n+1} \right|
