Question : 125 of 271
Marks: +1, -0
1x4−1\frac{1}{x^4-1}
Solution:
Let I=∫1x4−1dxI=\int \frac{1}{x^4-1}dx
Let 1x4−1=1(x+1)(x−1)(x2+1)\frac{1}{x^4-1}=\frac{1}{(x+1)(x-1)(x^2+1)} =Ax+1+Bx−1+Cx+Dx2+1=\frac{A}{x+1}+\frac{B}{x-1}+\frac{Cx+D}{x^2+1}
⇒1=A(x−1)(x2+1)+B(x+1)(x2+1)+(Cx+D)(x+1)(x−1)\Rightarrow 1 = A(x-1)(x^2+1)+B(x+1)(x^2+1)+(Cx+D)(x+1)(x-1) ...(i)
Putting x = –1 in (i), we get 1 = A(–1 – 1)(1 + 1) ⇒ 1 = A(– 4) ⇒ A =−14=-\frac{1}{4}
Putting x = 1 in (i), we get 1 = B (1 + 1) (1 + 1) ⇒ 1 = B(2)(2) ⇒ B =14=\frac{1}{4}
Comparing coefficients of x3x^3 and constant in (i) on both sides, we get
A + B + C = 0 and – A + B – D = 1
⇒−14+14+C=0⇒C=0\Rightarrow -\frac{1}{4}+\frac{1}{4}+C=0\Rightarrow C=0 and 14+14−D=1⇒D=−12\frac{1}{4}+\frac{1}{4}-D=1\Rightarrow D=-\frac{1}{2}
∴1x4−1\therefore \frac{1}{x^4-1} =14(x+1)+14(x−1)+−12(x2+1)=\frac{1}{4(x+1)}+\frac{1}{4(x-1)}+\frac{-1}{2(x^2+1)}
∴∫1x4−1dx\therefore \int \frac{1}{x^4-1} dx =−14∫dxx+1+14∫dxx−1−12∫dxx2+1=-\frac{1}{4}\int \frac{dx}{x+1}+\frac{1}{4}\int \frac{dx}{x-1}-\frac{1}{2}\int \frac{dx}{x^2+1}
=−14log⁡∣x+1∣+14log⁡∣x−1∣−12tan⁡−1x+C=-\frac{1}{4}\log |x+1|+\frac{1}{4}\log |x-1|-\frac{1}{2}\tan^{-1}x+C
=14log⁡∣x−1x+1∣−12tan⁡−1x+C=\frac{1}{4}\log \left|\frac{x-1}{x+1}\right|-\frac{1}{2}\tan^{-1}x+C
