Question : 64 of 74
Marks: +1, -0
Write the conditions to maximise the yield of H2SO4\mathrm{H}_2\mathrm{SO}_4 by Contact process.
Solution:
The key step in the manufacture of sulphuric acid is oxidation of SO2\mathrm{SO}_2 to SO3\mathrm{SO}_3 in presence of V2O5\mathrm{V}_2\mathrm{O}_5 catalyst.
2SO2+O2V2O52SO3,2\mathrm{SO}_2 + \mathrm{O}_2 \xrightarrow{\mathrm{V}_2\mathrm{O}_5} 2\mathrm{SO}_3 ,
ΔH=196.6 kJ mol1\Delta H = -196.6\ \text{kJ mol}^{-1}
The reaction is exothermic and reversible. Hence, low temperature andhigh pressure are the favourable conditions for maximum yield of SO3\mathrm{SO}_3 . Inpractice a pressure of 2 bar and temperature of 720 K is maintained.
