Question : 26 of 74
Marks: +1, -0
Find the equation of a line that cuts off equal intercepts on the coordinate axes and passes through the point (2, 3).
Solution:
Let the required line make intercepts a on the x-axis and y-axis.
Then its equation is xa+yb\frac{x}{a} + \frac{y}{b} = 1
⇒ x + y = a ... (i)
Since (i) passes through the point (2, 3), we have
2 + 3 = a ⇒ a = 5
So, required equation of the line is
x5+y5=1⇒x+y=5\frac{x}{5} + \frac{y}{5} = 1 \Rightarrow x + y = 5
