Find a G.P. for which sum of the first two terms is – 4 and the fifth term is 4 times the third term.
Solution:
Let be first two terms and be third and fifth terms respectively. according to question = – 4 ⇒ a + ar = – 4 ⇒ a(1 + r) = – 4 ....(i) and = ⇒ = ⇒ = 4 ⇒ r = ± 2 If r = 2, then (i) becomes a(1 + 2) = – 4 ⇒a = If r = – 2, then (i) becomes a (1 – 2) = – 4 ⇒ a = 4 When a = and r = 2, then G.P. is , ...
