Question : 15 of 36
Marks: +1, -0
Saline hydrides are known to react with water violently producing fire. Can CO2CO_2, a well-known fire extinguisher, be used in this case? Explain.
Solution:
When saline hydrides react with water, the reaction is highly exothermic, the evolved hydrogen catches fire. e.g.,
NaH(s)+H2O(aq)NaH_(s) + H_2O_(aq)NaOH(aq)+H2(g)NaOH_(aq) + H_{2(g)} ↑ + heat
CO2CO_2 cannot be used in this case because it will react with hot metal hydride.
NaH + CO2CO_2 → HCOONa
