A ray of light of wavelength 600 nm600\,\text{nm} propagates from air into a medium. If its wavelength in the medium becomes 400 nm400\,\text{nm}, the refractive index of the medium is
    λ  medium   =λ  air   μ\;\; \lambda_{\;\text{medium }\;} = \frac{\lambda_{\;\text{air }\;}}{\mu}
Or, 400  =  600μ400 \;=\; \frac{600}{\mu}
∴μ  =  600400=1.5\therefore \mu \;=\; \frac{600}{400} = 1.5
