Why is the issue of sustainability important for development? Explain with examples.
Solution:
The issue of sustainability is important for the development for various reasons:
(i) The fast pace of development has caused serious environmental concerns to environment as land degradation, exploitation of resources, loss of habitat for living organisms and many more. These things are causing a great threat to survival and have to be dealt with efficiency.
(ii) Sustainable development refers to meet the needs of the present without compromising the needs of future generations. For example, in the case of groundwater, if we use more than what is being replenished by rain then we would be overusing this resource.
(iii) When we overuse a resource it would not be available to the future generations. Therefore, sustainability ensures that the resource is not overused and helps the future generations to get their fair share.
