Question : 20 of 26
Marks: +1, -0
(a) Calculate the distance of an object of height hh from a concave mirror of radius of curvature 20 cm20\,\text{cm}, so as to obtain a real image of magnification 2. Find the location of image also.
(b) Using mirror formula, explain why does a convex mirror always produce a virtual image.
Solution:
(a) Calculation of distance of an object and location of image
(b) Reason for virtual image, through convex mirror
(a) Given R=−20 cmR=-20\,\text{cm} , and magnification m=−2m=-2
Focal length of the mirror f=R2=−10 cmf=\frac{R}{2}=-10\,\text{cm}
⇒−110=12u+1u\Rightarrow -\frac{1}{10} = \frac{1}{2u} + \frac{1}{u}
⇒u=−15 cm\Rightarrow u=-15\,\text{cm}
∴v=2×−15 cm=−30 cm\therefore v=2 \times -15\,\text{cm} = -30\,\text{cm}
Magnification (m)=−vu\text{Magnification}\,(m)=-\frac{v}{u}
−2=−vu-2=-\frac{v}{u}
⇒v=2u\Rightarrow v=2u
Using mirror formula
1f=1v+1u\frac{1}{f}=\frac{1}{v}+\frac{1}{u}
(b) 1f=1v+1u\frac{1}{f}=\frac{1}{v}+\frac{1}{u}
Using sign convention, for convex mirror, we have
f>0,u<0f>0, u<0
From the formula
1v=1f−1u\frac{1}{v}=\frac{1}{f}-\frac{1}{u}
∵f\because f is positive and uu is negative,
⇒v\Rightarrow v is always positive, hence image is always virtual.
