Question : 5 of 49
Marks: +1, -0
What may be the stable oxidation state of the transition element withthe following d-electron configurations in the ground state of their atoms :
3d3,3d5,3d8 and 3d43d^{3}, 3d^{5}, 3d^{8} \text{ and } 3d^{4} ?
Solution:
(i) 3d33d^{3}: Stable oxidation state will be +5 due to outer electronicconfiguration 3d34s23d^{3}4s^{2}(+2, +3, +4, +5).
(ii) 3d53d^{5}: Stable oxidation state will be +2 and +7 due to outer electronicconfiguration 3d54s23d^{5}4s^{2}(+2, +3, +4, +6, +7).
(iii) 3d83d^{8}: Stable oxidation state will be +2 due to outer electronicconfiguration 3d84s23d^{8}4s^{2}(+2, +3, +4).
(iv) 3d43d^{4}: Stable oxidation state will be +3 and +6 due to outer electronicconfiguration 3d44s23d^{4}4s^{2}. There is no d4d^{4} configuration in ground state, as itbecomes 3d54s13d^{5}4s^{1}
