Question : 23 of 53
Marks: +1, -0
Suggest the most important type of intermolecular attractive interaction in the following pairs.
(i) n-Hexane and n-octane
(ii) I2\mathrm{I}_2 and CCl4\mathrm{CCl}_4
(iii) NaClO4\mathrm{NaClO}_4 and water
(iv) Methanol and acetone
(v) Acetonitrile (CH3CN)(\mathrm{CH}_3\mathrm{CN}) and acetone (C3H6O)(\mathrm{C}_3\mathrm{H}_6\mathrm{O}).
Solution:
(i) n-Hexane and n-octane : London dispersion forces as both themolecules are non-polar.
(ii) I2\mathrm{I}_2 and CCl4\mathrm{CCl}_4 : London dispersion forces as both the molecules are non-polar.
(iii) NaClO4\mathrm{NaClO}_4 and water : Ion-dipole interactions as NaClO4\mathrm{NaClO}_4 in water givesNa+\mathrm{Na}^{+}and ClO−4\mathrm{ClO}^{-4} Ions. These ions interact with polar water molecules.
(iv) Methanol and acetone : Dipole-dipole interactions as both themolecules are polar.
(v) Acetonitrile and acetone : Dipole-dipole interactions as both themolecules are polar.
