Write the equations for the preparation of 1-iodobutane from
(i) 1-butanol
(ii) 1-chlorobutane
(iii) but-1-ene

Solution:

(i) 1-Iodobutane may be prepared from 1-butanol as :

CH3—(CH2)2—CH2—OH

CH3—(CH2)2—CH2—I

(ii) From 1-Chlorobutane

H3C—(CH2)2—CH2—Cl+NaI––––––––▶CH3—(CH2)2—CH2I+NaCl

NaCl formed is precipitated in dry acetone.
(iii) From but-1-ene as :

CH3—H2C—HC=CH2+HI––––––––▶CH3—CH2—CH2—CH2—I
