Write the equations for the preparation of 1-iodobutane from
(i) 1-butanol
(ii) 1-chlorobutane
(iii) but-1-ene
Solution:  
(i) 1-Iodobutane may be prepared from 1-butanol as :
CH3−(CH2)2−CH2−OH→RedP/I2CH3−(CH2)2−CH2−I\mathrm{CH_3-(CH_2)_2-CH_2-OH} \xrightarrow[\mathrm{Red P/I_2}]{} \mathrm{CH_3-(CH_2)_2-CH_2-I}
(ii) From 1-Chlorobutane
H3C−(CH2)2−CH2−Cl+NaI→CH3−(CH2)2−CH2I+NaCl\mathrm{H_3C-(CH_2)_2-CH_2-Cl} + \mathrm{NaI} \rightarrow \mathrm{CH_3-(CH_2)_2-CH_2I} + \mathrm{NaCl}
NaCl formed is precipitated in dry acetone.
(iii) From but-1-ene as :
CH3−H2C−HC=CH2+HI→CH3−CH2−CH2−CH2−I\mathrm{CH_3-H_2C-HC=CH_2} + \mathrm{HI} \rightarrow \mathrm{CH_3-CH_2-CH_2-CH_2-I}
