Question : 3 of 32
Marks: +1, -0
Depict the galvanic cell in which the reaction :Zn(s)+2Ag(aq)+Zn(aq)2++2Ag(s)\mathrm{Zn}_{(s)} + 2\,\mathrm{Ag}_{(aq)}^{+} \rightarrow \mathrm{Zn}_{(aq)}^{2+} + 2\,\mathrm{Ag}_{(s)} takes place.
Further show:
(i) Which of the electrode is negatively charged?
(ii)The carriers of the current in the cell.
(iii) Individual reaction at each electrode.
Solution:
The cell will be represented as
Zn(s)Zn(aq)2+Ag(aq)+Ag(s)\mathrm{Zn}_{(s)} \mid \mathrm{Zn}_{(aq)}^{2+} \parallel \mathrm{Ag}_{(aq)}^{+} \mid \mathrm{Ag}_{(s)}
(i) Anode, i.e., zinc electrode will be negatively charged.
(ii) Electrons are current carriers. The current will flow from silver to zinc in the external circuit.
(iii) At anode : Zn(s)Zn(aq)2++2e\mathrm{Zn}_{(s)} \rightarrow \mathrm{Zn}_{(aq)}^{2+} + 2\,\mathrm{e}^{-}
At cathode : Ag(aq)++eAg(s)\mathrm{Ag}_{(aq)}^{+} + \mathrm{e}^{-} \rightarrow \mathrm{Ag}_{(s)}
