Question : 36 of 43
Marks: +1, -0
Give evidence that [Co(NH3)5Cl]SO4\mathrm{[Co(NH_3)_5Cl]SO_4} and [Co(NH3)5SO4]Cl\mathrm{[Co(NH_3)_5SO_4]Cl} are ionisation isomers.
Solution:
The ionisation isomers dissolve in water to yield different ions andthus react differently to various reagents:
[Co(NH3)5Cl]SO4+Ba2+BaSO4(s)\mathrm{[Co(NH_3)_5Cl]SO_4} + \mathrm{Ba^{2+}} \rightarrow \mathrm{BaSO_{4(s)}}(white ppt.)
[Co(NH3)5SO4]Cl+Ba2+\mathrm{[Co(NH_3)_5SO_4]Cl} + \mathrm{Ba^{2+}} \rightarrow No reaction
[Co(NH3)5Cl]SO4+Ag+\mathrm{[Co(NH_3)_5Cl]SO_4} + \mathrm{Ag^{+}} \rightarrow No reaction
[Co(NH3)5SO4]Cl+Ag+AgCl(s)\mathrm{[Co(NH_3)_5SO_4]Cl} + \mathrm{Ag^{+}} \rightarrow \mathrm{AgCl_{(s)}} (white ppt.)
