Time required to decompose SO2Cl2\mathrm{SO_2Cl_2} to half of its initial amount is 60 minutes. If the decomposition is a first order reaction, calculate the rate constant of the reaction.
Solution:  
For a first order reaction, k=0.693t1/2k=\frac{0.693}{t_{1/2}}
=0.69360=\frac{0.693}{60}
=1.155×102min1=1.155 \times 10^{-2} \, \text{min}^{-1}
or, k=0.69360×60k=\frac{0.693}{60 \times 60}
=1.925×104s1=1.925 \times 10^{-4} \, \text{s}^{-1}
