Question : 6 of 37
Marks: +1, -0
Three capacitors each of capacitance 9 pF are connected in series.
(a) What is the total capacitance of the combination?
(b) What is the potential difference across each capacitors if the combination is connected to a 120 V supply?
Solution:
(a) C = C13\frac{C_1}{3} = 93\frac{9}{3} pF or C = 3 pF
(b) Net charge stored in combination of capacitors is
Q = CV = 3 × 10−1210^{-12} × 120 = 360 pC
So, potential difference across each capacitor is
V1V_1 = QC1\frac{Q}{C_1} = 360 pC9 pF\frac{360\,\mathrm{pC}}{9\,\mathrm{pF}} or V1V_1 = 40 volts
