A 100 Ω resistor is connected to a 220 V, 50 Hz a.c. supply.
(a) What is the rms value of current in the circuit?
(b) What is the net power consumed over a full cycle?
Solution:  
(a) Here virtual a.c. voltage is 220 V at a frequency of 50 Hz.
So, rms value of current
IvI_v = EvR\frac{E_v}{R} = 220100\frac{220}{100} = 2.2 A
(b) Power in complete cycle
P = EvIccos⁡ΦE_v I_c \cos \Phi = EvIvE_v I_v cos 0° or P = 2.2 × 220 = 484 W
