The hypotenuse of a right angled triangle has its ends at the points (1, 3) and (–4, 1). Find the equation of the legs (perpendicular sides) of the triangle.
Solution:  
Since the hypotenuse of a right angled triangle has its ends at the points (1, 3) and (–4, 1).

Thus above conditions shows that it can have two right angles, as shown in the figure, one at C, and the other one at C′.
⇒ Either the sides are BC′ and AC′ with respective equations x = 1 and y = 1 or they are BC and AC with respective equations y = 3 and x = –4.
