Question : 33 of 74
Marks: +1, -0
Point R(h, k) divides a line segment between the axes in the ratio 1: 2. Find equation of the line.
Solution:
Let AB be the given line segment making intercepts a and b on the x-axis & y-axis respectively.
Then, the equation of line AB is xa+yb\frac{x}{a}+\frac{y}{b} = 1
So, these points are A(a, 0) and B(0, b).
Now, R(h, k) divides the line segment AB
in the ratio 1 : 2.
1×0+2×a1+2\frac{1\times 0+2\times a}{1+2} = h and 1×b+2×01+2\frac{1\times b+2\times 0}{1+2} = k
⇒ a = 3h2\frac{3h}{2} and b = 3k
So, the required equation of the line is x3h2+y3k\frac{x}{\frac{3h}{2}}+\frac{y}{3k} = 1 ⇒ 2x3h+y3k\frac{2x}{3h}+\frac{y}{3k} = 1
