Find the domain and the range of the real function f defined by f (x) = |x – 1|.
Solution:
We have f (x) = |x – 1| Here, f (x) is a modulus function and since modulus of a real number is uniquely defined on real positive number. ∴ The domain of f (x) is R. We see that f (x) = |x – 1| f (x) = ⇒ f (x) = From above, we observe that in both cases f (x) ≥ 0. Hence, range of f (x) is [0, ∞).
