Question : 29 of 36
Marks: +1, -0
Find the domain and the range of the real function f defined by
f (x) = |x – 1|.
Solution:
We have f (x) = |x – 1|
Here, f (x) is a modulus function and since modulus of a real number is uniquely defined on real positive number.
∴ The domain of f (x) is R.
We see that f (x) = |x – 1|
f (x) = {x1,if x1(x1),if x<1\begin{cases} x - 1, & \text{if } x \ge 1 \\ -(x-1), & \text{if } x < 1 \end{cases} ⇒ f (x) = {x1,if x11x,if x<1\begin{cases} x-1, & \text{if } x \ge 1 \\ 1 - x, & \text{if } x < 1 \end{cases}
From above, we observe that in both cases f (x) ≥ 0.
Hence, range of f (x) is [0, ∞).
