Question : 11 of 22
Marks: +1, -0
Enthalpy of combustion of carbon to CO2\mathrm{CO}_2 is –393.5 kJmol1\mathrm{kJ\,mol^{-1}}. Calculate the heat released upon formation of 35.2 g of CO2\mathrm{CO}_2 from carbon and dioxygen gas.
Solution:
C + O2\mathrm{O}_2CO2\mathrm{CO}_2 ; ΔH = –393.5 kJ
Since When 44 g of CO2 is formed from carbon and dioxygen gas, heat released = 393.5 kJ
∴ When 35.2 g of CO2 is formed from carbon and dioxygen gas, heat released
= 393.5×35.244\frac{393.5 \times 35.2}{44} = 13851.244\frac{13851.2}{44} = 314.8 kJ
Thus, ΔH = - 314.8 kJ
