Question : 25 of 32
Marks: +1, -0
What happens when
(i) sodium metal is dropped in water ?
(ii) sodium metal is heated in free supply of air ?
(iii) sodium peroxide dissolves in water ?
Solution:
(i) H2\mathrm{H}_2 gas is evolved which catches fire due to the heat generated during the reaction.
2Na + 2H2O2\mathrm{H}_2\mathrm{O} → 2NaOH+H2(g)2\mathrm{NaOH}+\mathrm{H}_{2(g)} ↑
(ii) Sodium peroxide is formed along with a small amount of Na2O\mathrm{Na}_2\mathrm{O}
2Na(s)+O2(g)2\mathrm{Na}_{(s)} + \mathrm{O}_{2(g)} → 2Na2O(s)(minor)\underset{\text{(minor)}}{2\mathrm{Na}_2\mathrm{O}_{(s)}}
Na2O(s)+12O2\mathrm{Na}_2\mathrm{O}_{(s)} + \frac{1}{2}\mathrm{O}_2 → Na2O2(s)(major)\underset{\text{(major)}}{\mathrm{Na}_2\mathrm{O}_{2(s)}}
(iii) It liberates hydrogen peroxide.
Na2O2+2H2O\mathrm{Na}_2\mathrm{O}_2+2\mathrm{H}_2\mathrm{O} → 2NaOH+H2O22\mathrm{NaOH} + \mathrm{H}_2\mathrm{O}_2
